Here is the finished cell phone pouch from my oyster stitch sample. This isnt a very good scan but it was the best I could do for now. I will take better photos later on, once I have my computer back. I dont want to add alot of my software to this loner computer.
I really enjoy making these cell phone pouches. Each one is custom fit to the phone of the person who is to receive the pouch and is a one of a kind original design.
I will be making them for some time to catch up with the orders I have gotten for them.
I received a number of emails requesting more information about my cell phone pouch so I decided to post a general instruction on how I made this one.
I first sketched the general pattern in my journal some time ago. To stitch the design I drew a 4'' by 6'' rectangle on premium unbleached muslin. I drew the circles for the spoke wheels on the fabric with a wash away pen. Next I hooped the fabric with a piece of quilters fleece behind the muslin.
I stitched the piece randomly. I used several weights of fibers in the same color pallette I had chosen for this. The stitches used were barred chain, twisted chain, chain stitch and the spoke wheels. After the peice was filled I sewed on some beads to add some sparkle.
to see great instruction on how to stitch the embroidery stitches please follow this link to Sharonb's Stitch Dictionary. There are great step by step photos and written directions for tons of stitches.
To sew the pouch : Cut a lining piece a little larger than your finished piece. Pin it right sides together along the top (6'') side of the piece . Stitch as close to your embellished stitching as your sewing machine will allow . Trim seam allowance to 1/4'' and turn. Fold in half rightsides together and stitch across the bottom and the side. Turn rightside out and add additional embellishments.
I twisted 2 feet of the same fibers I stitched the sample piece with together and couched it around the top, down the side seam, and across the bottom seam to make the seams blend into the piece. I then added the dangles to the side by stringing beads and other bling on the same fibers and stitching them to the side.
I then twisted more of the same fibers about 18'' in length together then folded the length in half and left it twist around itself again to make the carrying strap. It is stitched on the inside top edge by hand.
